Early Screening Inventory Training

The Early Screening Inventory-Revised (ESI-R™) 2008 Edition provides a brief developmental screening instrument designed to be individually administered to children from 3.0 to 5.11 years of age. The ESI-R helps teachers identify children for whom we need additional information to support their educational progress. Research has shown the ESI-R to be highly reliable and valid. Examiner administers individually, 15-20 minutes per child. Child scores in the refer, rescreen or OK range based on the age norms. The ESI-R addresses fine motor, gross motor, language and cognitive development.

Local Data Collection Process

Early Screening Inventory-Revised has been adopted by the WMISD and MISD Early Childhood Team to meet the requirements of the GSRP and Head Start Legislation for a common screening tool. It is to be used by all preschools in the WMISD and MISD area. Local Superintendents, NMCAA and NEMCSA have approved this tool. Data is collected on the entire class and results are sent to WMISD. Children at risk based on ESI-R results will be supported by appropriate educational professionals. The Next Steps document describes the process for teachers’ “next steps” for supporting children after the ESI-R screening is complete.
