Assistive Technology
The WMISD provides assistive technology (AT) support within each of our local school districts and in our own center-based classrooms. According to the National Institute of Standards and Technology, AT “can be defined as any item, piece of equipment, or product system, whether commercially off the shelf, modified, or customized, that is used to increase, maintain, or improve the functional capabilities of individuals with disabilities. (29 U.S.C. Sec 2202(2)).”
In other words, AT is any form of technology that can be used to assist any individual with any disability in performing a function that would otherwise be too difficult to perform. Within education, AT can be the avenue that helps students achieve their goals and access the curriculum.
